Encouragement vs. Praise

We all know children need to be acknowledged to promote healthy self-esteem. Be careful not to mistake praise for encouragement. Children who are constantly praised for winning a race, drawing the best picture or being the smartest can often feel if for some reason they can no longer perform they are no longer worthy. Encouragement on the other hand, acknowledges effort and the inherent value of the child.
